Here is the prompt: For this assignment, as you continue to read the novel, document a close reading of another letter in the novel. As you did in Homework 1.1, make a list of what textual details in the letter you find particularly salient and how they contribute to producing the meaning of the letter. Then, based on your close reading of the letter, make a list of things you might want to pay particular attention to in the rest of the novel and/or questions you might want to ask of the rest of the text.
Answer:I find letter ten really interesting, in that it presents the reader of a key piece of information on Eliza. It is necessary to mention that in the previous letter, Eliza talked about how Mrs.Richman warned Eliza about Major Sanford having an undesirable reputation of breaking up families and being ‘coquettish’ for a man.
The first part of the letter I find interesting because Eliza or the writer took great pains to describe Sanford’s action and demeanor towards Eliza. Sanford’s action was described as ‘an air of affectionate tenderness’. It is a common term to use when describing actions and effects, however, under this particular circumstance where Sanford’s reputation is already under scrutiny, ‘air’ has to it a sense of flightiness, it is fake and not down to earth. ‘He appeared, however, not to notice’ Eliza’s gloom of suspicion. The word ‘appeared’ makes it possible that Sanford’s action is affected. Conversation is described as ‘adapted to’ Eliza’s taste and is ‘calculated’ to make Eliza feel at ease. These two words made Sanford’s actions seem artificial, these are also words people use when undertaking interactions with a less sincere or less personal disposition.
While at first I felt genuinely happy for Eliza to be wary of Sanford, details from later part of the letter made me change my point of view. Where as I first thought Eliza to be on guard by her own will and accord, I later discovered that it is Mrs. Richman’ s influence on her. Richman’s ‘lecture’ still ‘rang’ in Eliza’s head. She considers Richman’s friendly warning as lecture and it has an distasteful attribute of ‘ringing’ when she thinks of it. ‘Her watchful eye now traced every turn of mine’. Eliza seems to describe herself as possessed by Richman, and it not seem to favor the occupation of Richman of her. It might be a tell giving away Eliza’s later rebellion.
The Major’s two departure was described with completely difference. First time when Sanford left, the language was terse and relieved. ‘He took leave and I retired to dress for the day…’ The second time however, it is easy to discern the change in attitude of Eliza, as she describes in detail ‘when he handed me in, and, pressing my hands to his lips, retired.’ Sanford’s actions left Eliza transfixed and mesmerized, and his departure was felt with regret. this shift in description is juxtaposed with Eliza’s shift in attitude towards Sanford.
Last but not least, Eliza is still intoxicated with other’s appeal to her imagination, the ethereal. ‘His person, his manners…all combine to charm my fancy, and to my lively imagination, strew the path of life with flowers. This description is vainglorious, telling me what kind of person Eliza is and what attracts her.
We should pay attention to the word choice, sentence structure(in a letter often reflects the writer’s position and feelings). Whether the writer’s point of view expressed or actions taken is voluntary or not, which tells us who is in power. The change throughout is also significant.
